Getting married abroad GOV.UK service
2023 - 2024
Led the content design for this complex service, working with stakeholders from around the world to create a single, easy-to-use experience for all marriages and civil partnerships abroad.
In collaboration with a service designer and user researcher we identified the process British Citizens need to go through to get married abroad and how we could simplify this. For example, asking if they live in the UK or abroad sent UK-based users on a shorter journey.
I worked closely with stakeholders at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), regularly presenting at sprint reviews. I took an iterative approach, regularly testing and refining the content to meet user needs and those of individual countries, while ensuring the service remained as clear and simple as possible.
To avoid anyone travelling abroad, or even getting to their wedding, without the documents they need I created clear, multi-part start pages that covered the documents they needed to apply – and said in the confirmation screen and confirmation emails if they needed to take anything with them.
For countries where the British Citizen needed additional documentation, I created bespoke start pages to accommodate these documents alongside the main journey (see the Spain example).
